A sleek, thin black cat padded through the pine forest, bones sticking out under his pelt. His paws sent the pine needles into a mess, his black pelt blending him in with the shadows of the evening. Sometimes the cat just needed a walk to chill. Doesn't everyone?

The canopy overhanging ShadowClan's territory fit the marshy land well. Nightstar crept through the place. A kestrel screeched and flew away from him. Coward. The leader of ShadowClan had no intention of eating the bird, though it would make a good snack. He had had food already, and did not require any more. The screech of the kestrel echoed in his ears, but it slowly died away. Nightstar could only hear his paws hitting the dirt. Quietly was how he normally walked, but Nightstar wasn't trying to be so careful. He was just trying to take a little walk to calm down. The whistle of the wind sounded in his ears, but he paid no attention to it.

Pine scent wafted through his nostrils. Ah, just like home. Scent of prey came, too, but it was too late in the evening for Nightstar to be very excited about it. He slapped a paw on a moving leaf, but the shrew scurried away. "Mouse dung," he muttered, but Nightstar kept walking darkly. He could practically taste the territory. He opened his mouth and air streamed in. Then, breathing out, he tried to taste the oxygen in him. No luck. Ah, well, tasting oxygen wasn't very smart anyway. Still, the smell of pine and prey and marsh didn't just come through his nose. It entered his mouth, and so did the taste of the night. It was soon to be time for the stars to rise.

Needles from pine trees crunched under his feet. He shook one that had been stuck on him off. Stupid pine needles. No matter how content Nightstar was, he was always negative. Nothing and nobody could change that. He was a rather calm cat right now, however. A blast of wind hit his head, but he was used to it. A root blocked his path. Thinking he could easily get over it, he ran to make it feel foolish. Then he tripped. "Mouse dung," Nightstar growled for the second time that evening. Getting up, Nightstar shook the needles from his pelt. It happens to every cat, he thought angrily. Not just me. Every cat. Tail lashing, he padded through the shadows once again. What do I have to do when I get back to camp, hopefully much later than now? I would think nothing. Okay, good. Pushing that thought aside, Nightstar decided he could take a long walk, possibly stopping to talk on the way.

Stormcloud breathed in the frosty night air, letting the cool breeze rustle through the tom's dark fur. The deputy closed his eyes and breathed in again, relishing in his glory. It was hardly a night to remember, but the proud deputy was no lazy coward, and his joy that his Clan was safe from the other, biased Clans was enough to 'allow' him to take a nightly walk.

Abruptly, Stormcloud opened his eyes and took a long draught of air, his senses searching for prey. Prey was plentiful in the marshy woods, and Stormcloud crouched down, testing the wind. He might as well have a midnight snack - the warriors were fed, asleep, and he had earned it anyway. The sharp blue eyes narrowed, and Stormcloud silently crept up on a slightly-tired kestrel; the kestrel, though the deputy did not know it, that had flown away from the ShadowClan leader just a few moments ago.

The great large grey body pounced, and the kestrel let out a single cry before Stormcloud silenced it with a whap of his paw. The deputy stood up tall, gloating over the helpless piece of prey. He picked it up and and carried it a few steps to eat it -

- only to run into one of the last cats Stormcloud wanted to meet. His leader, Nightstar.

Comtemplating the consequences of doing otherwise, Stormcloud dipped his head respectfully. He felt annoyed that the leader should sneak up on him like this in the middle of night, especially just after he'd done some hunting. The deputy didn't say a word, clinging onto the dead kestrel like it was his life; extremely reluctant to let it go.

Nightstar looked sharply at the cat before him before realising it was Stormcloud, his deputy. The ShadowClan leader was quickly aware of the fact that Stormcloud was about to eat a kestrel, presumably the one that had flown away from Nightstar moments ago.
The black cat faintly smiled. "Good evening, Stormcloud. I see you've caught a bird." He wasn't unhappy that Stormcloud looked ready to eat the kestrel, for Nightstar would've eaten that shrew himself had he caught it. He was only regretting that he hadn't caught the shrew (or the kestrel), and that the deputy got some fresh-kill while he didn't.

Casually, Nightstar added, "Nice to see you. I'm interested that you decided to take a walk and hunt while your leader was away doing the same thing. If you didn't know I was away, I shouldn't blame you, but still, be more aware. If you did know...I hope you left a senior, trusted warrior in charge." Irritably, Nightstar flicked his tail. He was in a good mood, so he didn't feel like venting to Stormcloud, but if the camp was deliberately left unguarded (unless a warrior was left to take charge), Nightstar would be angry. Deciding to change the subject, he continued, "I hope your day has gone fairly well?" The black cat's smooth fur was ruffled in a cool breeze as he listened for the answer.

Stormcloud nodded again, dropping the kestrel on the ground so he could speak. "Greetings, Nightstar. I didn't expect you to be out this late..." Stormcloud tilted his head to one side. "But I put Icegaze on duty while you were gone." The warrior that Stormcloud had chosen wasn't exactly a senior warrior, but the deputy trusted Icegaze... at least, more than other cats.

Stormcloud hesitated. He wasn't the sharpest claw in the paw, even though the ShadowClan leader's question was fairly simple.

"My day has gone well," he eventually continued coolly. "Hunting was good, and still other Clans haven't tried to steal any territory..." The grey cat snorted, as if that were a funny joke. Then he collected himself and gazed at Nightstar. The cat was not as big as Stormcloud was, and the deputy thought it might be easy to kill the black leader.

However, the deputy did a rare bit of reasoning, and realized that the leader had all his nine lives left. Besides, Stormcloud was currently fine with his backseat position... for now.

Icegaze strolled around the perimeter of the camp, checking all nooks and crannies for intruders of unwelcome guests. Deciding there were no threats, the lithe she-cat lingered over the conversation she had earlier with Stormcloud. The tom's tone had been icy, and there was something about him that made her uneasy. Was it his piercing gaze? His sharp claws? His handsome smile? No, it was something deeper... ambition? No, surely not. Nightstar trusted Stormcloud, it would be foolish of her to think he had darker intentions than that of attending the clan. Nevertheless, I'll be ready to protect Nightstar in an instant... with my life if necessary.

A midnight she-cat walked into camp, a starling and a rabbit clutched in her mouth. She nodded at her leader before walking toward the fresh-kill pile and dropping her prey down. She started to wash one of her long black claws.

[Blackshadow, just so you know, Nightstar is currently out of camp, so Blackshadow couldn't dip her head to him if she was in the camp...]

Nightstar nodded as Stormcloud spoke. "Good, good. Very good." Nightstar trusted Icegaze, or at least to the point where he would let her watch the camp. The black leader didn't fully trust any cat; he wasn't even sure if he trusted himself. He was pretty sure, of course, but not fully sure. Turning his attention back to Stormcloud, Nightstar simply nodded again at the deputy's response. At the territory remark, he grunted. "Other Clans don't usually try to steal our territory, now do they."

When Stormcloud stopped speaking, Nightstar felt a hint of mistrust for the deputy enter his body. He trusted Stormcloud with the deputy position, but he didn't trust him with his life. Plus, Stormcloud was bigger and could probably kill him easily...but he dismissed the thought. Stormcloud wasn't that stupid, and Nightstar shouldn't doubt his loyalty. Besides, the ShadowClan leader had all of his nine lives left. The grey tom would have to be daft to attack Nightstar, and Nightstar didn't think he was daft.

Finishing cleaning her claws, Blackshadow meowed to herself.
"I don't think..."
She looked over at Stormcloud and Nightstar.
"I don't think Nightstar exactly trusts anyone..."
Her black ears swiveled toward the conversation, catching a few words.
"...try to steal our territory, now do they."

(Blackshadow, Stormcloud and Nightstar are not in camp. So if Blackshadow is, the only person she could talk to (or listen in on) would be Icegaze.)

Stormcloud nodded curtly - his 'joke' was being taken seriously. "I guess not," he meowed grudgingly. The large gray tom pawed the kestrel he had caught, getting more and more anxious to eat. Stormcloud flicked his ears. He pawed the ground slightly with impatience. "Is there anything else I need to know?" he asked, managing to sound respectful. The deputy was feeling slightly reproachful towards the leader - he was a fighter, and what sort of exciting activities had they had anyway? There hadn't even been a skirmish over borders recently!
